January 2012

photocrati galleryI’m embarking on a dream of learning to shoot film this year. I have always loved film photos, they are just so honest, dense and pure to me. They make me happy, even when they are imperfect.

So, I decided to bring my 2 film cameras with me to work to practice and see what came about.

My coworkers are really interesting, really and truly, every single one of them. We have “jumpseat confessions” on take-offs and landings and I am always fascinated by what I learn about others. I knew it would be fun to practice on them.

My first few images are of Agathe in Bellingham, Washington. She’s a stunning girl from France. She speaks with the most incredible accent, and blew me away when she talked airplanes with a passenger on our flight, she was in the French Air Force. I know, amazing.

Then it was off to Honolulu, Oahu. Jamie is the adorable beach babe. The sun makes her sneeze. I have known her for years, and she now has her very own place in my heart.

I took a few days off – then realized I had a few more film frames to use in the cameras – so I lugged them to San Jose, Ca and Kona, Hawaii.

I scored yet another phenomenal crew to fly with, Cheryl, Grace and Kimberly.

aaahhh. Mai Tai’s and laughs by the pool. Kona was super fun, hole in the wall bar and gorgeous sunset.
🙂

THEN the Seattle snow storm hit. I just continued flying without going home, I was too chicken to drive home to Tacoma, and then be stuck at home and not make it back for my Newark, NJ trip.

I woke up early to have lunch in NYC with my new crewmember Shannon, we got a phone call while we were in Times Square “Your flight has been cancelled due to the snow storm” — giggles and grins followed!

So, we had heard that the 9/11 memorial was incredibly good to Flight Crew members, so we headed straight there, we walk up, show our airline ID’s – and were ushered right in – they were so kind to us. Once inside the memorial, it really does hit you, the size that the Twin Towers were, how many people were in there and lost. I stood there looking at the eternity pools and standing next to me is a grown man, crying. He says to me “the mist coming off the water is like the spirits” – that was it, I was also in tears.

Shannon knows the city well, and I was lucky to tag along with her and see alot in the 8 hours we were down there. We ended the day just perfectly by watching Alec Baldwin film a scene for 30 Rock. So exciting!

So, if you are flying with me, come camera ready! 🙂
